The sea is in constant movement. This constant motion means the coasts are shaped by erosion, transportantion and sedimentation. This processes, are caused by the action of waves, tides and currents.
There are two types of coastal features: those formed by erosion or those formed by sedimentation.
The erosive ones, are found on rocky coasts, this ones are cliffs, abrasion platforms and caves.
-Cliffs: high rough walls of rock formed by the action of the waves. In the picture, we can see lots of cliffs, this is because the position of the island makes them more exposed to waves.
-Abrasion platforms: the flat area at the bottom of the cliffs. In the photograph we can see some examples but they are not very large
-Caves: Formed by the action of water. In cies islands, we don´t have any example of this.
The coastal features formed by transportation and sedimentation are generally found on flatter coasts:
-Beaches: Formed by the acumulation of sand an gravel on the shore. The most famous in Cíes is "Playa de Rodas"
-Barrier islands: Deposits of sand parallel to the coast. In the picture, there are not barrier islands
-Tombolo: Small islands attached to the coast by a sand bank. There is one in the north island.
-Sand spit: Deposit of sands attached to the coast. There is one beside a tombolo in the north island.
-Lagoon: areas of water formed when sandbanks close off a bay or gulf. In this picture we don´t found any lagoon.
-Marshes: wetlands formed at the mouths of the rivers by the action of tides. There aren´t marshes in Cíes islands.
