Weathering |
Defined as the process of alteration and fragmentation of rocks by the joint action of the atmosphere, water and living things. There are different types of weathering:
-Physical by: -Biological -Chemical by:
+cryofracturing +oxidation
+thermal stress +carbonation
+hydration
In Cíes islands, not all of this types of weathering happen, only some of them. Now, I´m going to tell you the ones that happen hear:
-Biological weathering: The most important in Cíes Islands, it´s carried out by living things such as plant´s, moles, mosses, lichens...
-Oxidation: Takes places in rocks with iron, and it gives them a reddish-brown color.
-Carbonation: Process in which calcium carbonate (of rocks) joins with carbonic acid forming calcium bicarbonate, that is carried away, destroying the rock because it doesn´t has any natural cement
